My work is an antidote to the chaos I see in the world around me. It is an escape mechanism with a bright, naive quality.

I enjoy any subject matter, but colour and texture are of paramount importance in this increasingly computerised world. My travels in South America, Africa and the Far East, influenced primary colour schemes in my work whilst a more subtle use of colour evolved in renditions of European architecture and landscapes. Even though I enjoy portraiture and images of people, I tend to omit them from my idealised travel images which show usually crowded places empty for the viewer to imagine themselves in. My interest in portraiture began many years ago when I was commissioned to produce portraits of Gordon Brown and Nigel Lawson. My images may appear very modern, but they are also the result of a meticulous study of the ancient techniques of Greek, Roman and Byzantine mosaic portraits. The technique of optically mixing colours is influenced by the artists of the pointillist movement and is critical to my work with Swarovski Crystals. My current work is dominated by commissions of celebrity portraits where I aim to capture a likeness with a unique quality.

I choose tactile materials; predominantly Swarovski Crystals, mosaic and collage/mixed media. In these small shapes of individual interest, amalgamated to form a much more significant whole, I search for beauty and meaning in minute detail and the big picture simultaneously. Look carefully to see text and messages incorporated into my images, which often give information about the subject, or deliver a secondary or subversive message. Whatever the subject matter, I hope the viewer can return to my work again and again and have a new experience each time.
