hole punch dots portrait![]() |
Over the centuries the greatest families have relied on artists to capture their portraits to represent to future generations and it is a tradition that continues even in the age of the digital image. My interest in portraiture began many years ago when I was commissioned to produce portraits of Gordon Brown and Nigel Lawson. I am known for my distinctive style and ability to capture a likeness with a humourous quality. This style has evolved through much research of portraiture especially in mosaics dating back to the Greek, Roman and Byzantine eras. I have adapted my knowledge to characterise my own portraits with a link to these ancient mosaics, represented in a more contemporary Pop Art way and injected with humour and character. This means that whilst my images may appear very modern, they are also the result of a meticulous study of ancient techniques. Even though I enjoy portraiture and images of people, I often omit them from my idealised travel and landscape images which show usually crowded places empty for the viewer to project themselves into. | |

Overall, my work is an antidote to the chaos I see in the world around me. It is an escape mechanism with a bright, naive quality, as if seen through the eyes of a child. I like to be free to experiment with different media but despite this I strive to maintain a recognisable identity throughout my work. My travels in South America, Africa and the Far East, influenced primary colour schemes in my work whilst a more subtle use of colour evolved in renditions of European architecture and landscapes. I choose tactile materials. In these small shapes of individual interest, amalgamated to form a much more significant whole, I search for beauty and meaning in minute detail and the big picture simultaneously. Look carefully to see text and messages incorporated into my images, which often give information about the subject, or deliver a secondary or subversive message. Whatever the subject matter, I hope the viewer can return to my work again and again and have a new experience each time. |

I apply the same techniques to the different media I use and each medium has a connection to the next. For example, building an artwork from paper collage involves cutting the individual shapes to fit the composition in the same way as a mosaic. My hole punch dot images have a very similar technique to the Swarovski crystal works, in fact, I often use the hole punch technique as a study for later works in Swarovski. Both hole punch dots and Swarovski take their influence from the pointillist movement but also use the same techniques and principles as mosaic in the way the andamento flows. Finally, my mixed media images are an explosive combination of the above and also include painting and other media. I include text and commentary in these images as a reflection of my earlier work as a graphic designer. |

A 100% Swarovski Crystal image is something very precious and luxurious, a reflective image constantly changing with the light, a true investment for the future that will never be replicated. As such, it is very difficult to show the true beauty of these materials online, but the reaction to an original is always one of awe. The properties of the crystals are constantly changing depending on the light conditions. In sunlight they send scatterings of reflected colours around the room and in the semi dark they change mood altogether and the image takes on the appearance of a hologram. Each image contains thousands of Swarovski Crystals, all applied by hand. The technique of optically mixing colours is influenced by the artists of the pointillist movement and is critical to my work with Swarovski Crystals. My current work is dominated by commissions of celebrity portraits where I aim to capture a likeness with a unique quality. |

Mosaic
is an ancient art & has a rich history dating back to the third
century BC, from the Greeks, Romans and Byzantine mosaics, to the Art
Nouveau movement. It is enjoying a huge renaissance in the 21st Century.
Mosaics are at once a functional form and a decorative art with beautiful
reflective qualities making them both versatile and striking. The medium
of Mosaic has the added advantage of longevity above other art forms
due to its enduring physical properties. This is borne out by the many
beautiful examples which still survive today from the distant past. The
choice of materials and techniques are critical to the outcome of the
project. Each
one of my mosaics is made up of thousands of individually hand cut tesserae and edged with matching tiles to give the image a wrap-around
effect. Examples of my mosaic work have been published in Grout, Mosaic Yearbook 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, Funds Europe, Diana in Art (Caxton Publishing), The Complete Mosaic Handbook and also The Art of Mosaic (both Quintet Publishing). |

mixed media portrait![]() |
I like to be very expressive with mixed media, creating dynamic images which incorporate blatant and hidden messages. These artworks are on chunky box canvas and the image wraps around the edges. They include anything from found objects to precious Swarovski crystals, gold and silver leaf and paint. It is narrative art that tells a story pictorially and textually. The final splashes can appear quite violent and intense or simply droplets. This style takes its influence from different areas including the Pop Art movement and also drip art of the Abstract Expressionist movement... I suppose you could call it ‘Drip Pop!’ You can return to these images many times and always discover something new.. |

This is a very effective way for me to begin a study in Swarovski crystals. I like to experiment with different effects in this media. Although almost as time consuming as Swarovski crystal work, it is a more economical way of obtaining a similar effect (minus the reflective qualities of course). The 100cm x 100cm image of Elvis changes radically depending on your distance away from the portrait. This image is inspired by and incorporates the Chet Atkins quote 'He was white, but he sang black..' |
